May Casual Drinking Become a Serious Problem?

Many people drink alcoholic beverages as a way of relaxing or as a way of socializing and for some individuals this never becomes a problem. In the cases of some individuals however this can lead to serious problems with alcohol abuse and eventually lead to an even more serious problem – alcoholism.

It is often assumed by many that alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the same thing however the reality is that there is a difference between the two. One significant difference is that in most cases a person who is known to abuse alcohol does still have some control over when and if they drink while a person who suffers from alcoholism is often dependent on the use of alcohol.

Alcohol abuse often occurs when individuals begin drinking as a way to deal with the stress of certain situations such as losing a job or the death of a close loved one. While initially the effects of alcohol may numb the pain or reality of these circumstances over time it seems to take more and more alcohol to have the same effect. Over time this can lead to a dependence on alcohol known as alcoholism.

When alcohol abuse becomes an issue a person may know that they shouldn’t be drinking at that particular time however they allow poor judgment to win out over common sense and continue drinking anyway. In many cases this causes problems such as failing to keep up with prior commitments like taking care of children or other family responsibilities and may even have serious detrimental effects on job performance and the ability to maintain relationships.

It is often hard for individuals who are affected by alcohol abuse to admit they have a problem because this would mean they are admitting to not being in control of the situation which is often why they drink in the first place.

Just because a person has a drink or two on a regular basis such as a drink everyday with dinner or a drink each evening before bed, this does not necessarily mean they have a problem although attention should be paid to be sure that this practice does not lead to a problem over time.

Another distinction between casual drinking and alcohol abuse is when an individual looks for any opportunity to have a drink and use the cover that they are ‘celebrating’ something specific. For many people this may come in the form of acknowledging some minor achievement that does not really warrant celebration like finishing a good book or getting dinner ready on time. Although for average people this may not seem like much, to a person who has issues with alcohol abuse it may be considered a big deal as a way to give them a reason to drink in a situation that they consider celebratory.

When it comes to a point where a person finds themselves continually looking for a reason to celebrate in order to have a drink this may be an indication that a problem is starting to develop.

Wireless Technology to Improve Life of Diabetics

Online communities within-reach via mobile phones and the internet, can be easily utilized to help people with chronic disease like diabetes. The approach outlined in the International Journal of Networking and Virtual Organizations, would cut down healthcare costs and empower patients to manage their condition more effectively.

It is important to provide optimal healthcare for patients with chronic ailments such as, diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma while keeping the costs down.

Prevention and early detection of the disease is equally important, and critical as there is no cure to date, and with wireless technology, the condition will be better managed at a stage when progression to a more chronic state can be prevented.

Nilmini Wickramasinghe, who recently joined RMIT University, Australia after 15 years of conducting research in IT and healthcare in the USA is working with Steve Goldberg of INET International Inc., in Canada, to create a wireless system to empower patients that supports patient self-management for diabetes and other diseases.

“Diabetes is an important chronic disease increasing in prevalence throughout not only North America but also the world,” explained the researcher.

“Given the treatment costs for this increasing population, coupled with the increased non-working hours due to treatment requirements, increases in the prevalence of diabetes as is projected are indeed alarming to any healthcare system.”

Currently, technology initiatives in healthcare have yielded mixed results, perhaps due to a failure for such approaches to capture the richness, and potential of the modern healthcare environment, rather than an intrinsic flaw in taking an information technology approach, says the researcher.

In a preliminary study of twenty patients, the INET team led by Sheldon Silver, has demonstrated that it is possible for patients to dial in their own blood glucose readings using a mobile phone and to receive timely feedback from their healthcare worker.

The team explains that social networks such as Facebook and Linkedin also plays vital role in getting patients to connect with family, friends and others. The link between this type of community for healthcare management is indeed obvious.

The team plans for a model that would allow an online social network approach to be taken to patient healthcare management.

“We are confident that our model is especially important when implementing a technology enable solutions to any healthcare context and thus close by calling for more research in this area,” concluded Wickramasinghe and Goldberg.

Brown Bag Lunch Ideas to Save Cash and Calories

In these times, it makes sense to make money by saving money. One solid way to do that is to muster up your own brown bag lunch ideas. For those on a weight loss program, brown bagging it can also provide more control over calories, salt content, sugar, and white flour. Not to mention displacing the high cost of pre-packaged diet foods like protein shakes, meal bars, and microwaveable entrees.

Most fast food establishments do offer some diet choices, but these, too, are as expensive as any other meal there. If you spend the average $7.50 for a basic lunch (twice that in some cities) and you do it five days a week, 50 weeks of the year (here it comes…) that’s $1,840.00. That’s a lot of dough just to be chic with the office crowd. Here are some healthy and delicious brown bag lunch ideas that won’t empty your wallet or pad your hips.

1. Plan and prepare the core elements of your lunch the night before. Traditionally, a sack lunch includes a sandwich, a piece of fruit, something crunchy, and something sweet. Not rocket science, but worthy of careful consideration of each component if you’re calculating both cost and calories.

2. Add a healthy afternoon snack while you’re at it. Why give your $1.25 to the snack machine and get poor calories back in the bargain?

3. Select a drink. Although mostly relegated to the kiddie crowd, juice boxes and fruity pouch drinks do fit the bill. They tolerate being unrefrigerated and travel well. To lower cost and calories the most, however, consider taking a tea kit to the office.

4. When lunchtime comes, don’t eat at your desk if you don’t need to. Make the time your own by changing the scenery along with your posture. Sit outside with a friend. Listen to music in your car. Share your sweet with a brown bag confederate.

5. Take all the money you saved with these brown bag lunch ideas and go buy a new wardrobe. You may need one after cutting a year’s worth of lunch-fat from your waist!
