The Pursuit of Happiness

The pursuit of happiness is one of the primary goals of all humans. This, along with life and liberty, was declared as an essential right in the US declaration of independence. Every religion and philosophy has offered its pathway to happiness. Happiness is a state of mind and there are many paths to it. There are common prerequisites to sustained happiness as well as common causes of unhappiness. These usually transcend all classifications of gender, age or race. There are other factors which are very individual specific.

What is Happiness

Happiness is a state of the mind. The dictionary definition is ‘feelings of joy and pleasure mingled together”. A feeling of happiness is more than just an experience of joy or pleasure. It is a state of mind where the individual feels that “life is good”.

Becoming Happier

Happiness is a state of mind which can be induced by many means – some result in short term happiness while others result in long lasting happiness. One way of inducing long lasting happiness and bliss is meditation. For a busy person, a more practical way to becoming happier is to make steady progress towards meaningful goals. Even though this seems simple, it really is a very powerful technique to attain a state of long lasting happiness. The goals may vary from individual to individual, but for everyone happiness comes from merely making steady progress towards goals that are meaningful to them. The key is that goals have to be meaningful to you. Progress towards goals set by some one else will not bring happiness (unless you too desire the same goals).

There should be a balance in your goals to ensure that the prerequisites of happiness are fulfilled. These prerequisites include good health, sufficient income to meet basic needs, affection, some productive work or activity, defined and achievable goals and good attitude. All the money in the world will not make you happy if you ignore your health or have bad relationships. Also you must try to remove the causes of unhappiness from your life. These causes are – lack of any of the prerequisites for happiness, failure to achieve goals, envy, relationship problems, loneliness and fear of the opinion of others.

Studies have shown that a number of factors contribute to sustained happiness. Some of these are

•             Good self esteem

•             Feeling of control over one’s life

•             Supportive and warm relationships (marriage/friendship )

•             Satisfying work

•             Enjoyable leisure activities

•             Good attitude

•             Good Health

•             Moderation in everything

•             Impersonal interests

Thus a very effective process of becoming happier is to set goals for improvement in each one of these areas, start working towards these goals and then periodically reviewing the progress towards the goals.

So the first step is to set goals for yourself in the major aspects of your life. These goals have to be meaningful to you and they have to be specific and time bound. If the goals are not meaningful to you, you will derive little happiness from achieving them. Also if they are not specific and time bound, you will not be able to measure your progress towards these goals and thus will not experience the increased happiness which comes from making steady progress towards your goals. Goals need to be set for the major aspects of your life which contribute to happiness – Health, Financial, Relationships, Career, Attitude, Self Actualization etc.

Then you must assess where you currently are in relation to your goals. Say if your financial goal is to have savings of twenty thousand dollars in five years, you need to assess your net worth today and also your current income and expenses to know how much you are currently saving.

Next you must set up a time bound action plan to achieve your goals. For your financial goals this means determining the extra amount you need to save each month, either by earning more or spending less or both. Then you need to have a plan for earning more and for reducing your expenses. This plan needs to be specific with amounts and timing e.g. you will reduce expenses by $50 a month by eating out less often and you will increase income by $300 a month by taking on a part time job.

Then start implementing your plan and monitor the progress. As you see yourself meeting your periodic targets, you will find your happiness increasing. Many of us have experienced the happiness which comes from steadily losing one pound per week in a weight loss program. Imagine having the same effect in all aspects of your life. The important thing in this is to make steady progress towards your goals. Happiness will grow as you see yourself making progress. Once you achieve your initial goals, you need to set new goals – maybe in different areas of your life e.g. if you have achieved your fitness and financial goals, aim for making a difference to the world around you. (Making a difference is a source of deep and long lasting happiness). Being without a goal after achieving your earlier ones will reduce your happiness. Say you suddenly inherit some money and achieve your financial goals, you will be happy for some time, but the effects will soon wear off as your mind adjusts to the new level of affluence. To sustain happiness you will have to set new goals for yourself, maybe in different areas of your life.

Score A Winning Goal

“A successful attempt at scoring” is a general definition of goal.

Let’s break that definition of Goals down a little. When you attempt a goal, does that mean you hit the mark you were shooting for? Or does it mean you tried? And if you tried [attempted] and did not hit the goal you intended does that mean the attempt had no value? When a baby attempts to take the 1st step and falls, have they moved a little closer to walking? Of course he or she has! Success is at every “attempt”

Love Goals or hate them, most successful people set Goals. Can you succeed without them? Some have. What about you? Do you need a goal?

Maybe what we should do first is find out why goals are scary to many. For one thing, what if we set one and don’t achieve it. Are you now a failure? Hey, what is failure anyway?

Failing is actually hard to “make happen”.

When we get right down to it, failure is darn hard to make happen. I was a salesman for some time and it took about 10 calls until I made a sale. Each sale I made $1,000 dollars.

Here’s the question.

Did I fail 9 times and succeed once? So would say yes. You know what I did? I said to myself, it takes 10 calls to make every sale. So each call I go on I get paid $100.00 per visit. Payday just happens to come after the 10th call. How do you think I started looking at those “visits” I needed to make? You got it; they were simply visits, not failures. In fact, I got pretty excited about each one, I knew that each “visit” I did helped me get one step closer to payday. Now it became fun. What happened to stress? Gone. What happened to depression? Gone. What happened to my attitude? It shot thru the roof and stays there today.

Do you see what is happening here?

Do you see where the problem really is? Yepper. It’s all in our head. It’s how you look at the situation.

You can change your success rate today! Did you ever hear the saying; your attitude affects your altitude? Well, the problem is it’s true.

Let’s get back to setting goals.

We don’t set goals because we don’t like to fail. But you just learned that it’s nearly impossible to fail. It’s just the way we look at it that causes the problem. In fact the only true way to fail is to quit.

Remember what I did to turn my “failures” into part of my success on the 10 sales calls I made to get a sale? Well, you can do the same thing with whatever you want to accomplish.

Has this made setting goals easier for you?

Like anything, it takes practice but now you know another way to set goals and be the leader that you’ve been waiting for!

It’s now time to set yourself up to win at everything you do.

You have the only tool you really need to set your goals and win every time. It’s the tool of DECISION. Deciding how you’re going to think about yourself and your business.

You are a winner every time. At everything you do. You never fail. Every step and action you do is part of your ultimate payday.

Your next Goal.

You decide what it is and what is needed to reach payday. All the ingredients all necessary. The rain and the sun. You love the them both. Dance in the rain and bathe in the sun. It’s all just a part of your Success Plan!

The Plan for Your Better Future

In spite the news of recovery of economy, we still have to walk a long path in order to attain the same economic condition. Many people those had planned their tomorrow wisely also got tumbled due to the situations that arise in past years. In such a situation the question arises, am I spending a lot of money? Should I cut something from my budget? Should I start looking for an alternate way to earn the money?

In such uncertain time, the first thing what we all should do is to distinguish between our wants and needs, and spending smart. Take a good look at your home budget, you will definitely find many things, which are required less, but you have added them in bulk. Why to buy more when you can manage in less. You can save lots of money if you will distinguish the wants and needs very precisely. Needs are the simple things that are the basic need of a person to survive, such as shelter, food clothes and transportation. Wants can be defined as the things that enhance our lifestyle such as, a car. If you will calculate the expenses of fuel and maintenance of a car then you can easily evaluate that traveling on the bus, trams and metro train is much cheaper than the car. So, why to use a car when there are other cheaper ways of transportation.

Now that you have a clear picture of needs and wants, the next thing is to spend smartly. Usually we run daily to the shops for groceries or food items, dish soap, shampoo, etc., but if we will buy non-perishable groceries and other required things in advance and in bulk then we can save money on bulk purchasing. In bulk purchasing, there is a possibility of getting discounts, and also buying in bulk can save your money which you spend while traveling to and fro for the shopping.  You can also replace the tube lights and bulbs with the energy efficient bulbs that can help you to save money on the electric bill.

Every small and wise step can help you to save a big amount of money. You certainly can cut your expenses in much miscellaneous spending which you do in coffee shop, snacks, etc. Without a proper plan and wise decisions no one can have a better future.

Can You Have a Better Life?

Once Anthony Robbins said: “Most people never feel secure because they are always worried that they will lose their job, lose the money they already have, lose their spouse, and lose their health, and so on. The only true security in life comes from knowing that every single day you are improving yourself in some way, that you are increasing the caliber of who you are, and that you are valuable to your company, your friends, and your family.

You can’t improve the quality of life in a day or overnight, to improve the quality of life, it requires the commitment, effort and time. Many of us believe that learning is a part of school and colleges only. We forget that learning is an ongoing process; it can happen to anybody, any time, and anywhere.  Yes! Improving quality of life needs you to learn, what is best for you, what you should learn from the mistake you did? What right choices you should make in order to make your life much better, happier and satisfactory?

To make a clear picture in your mind to improve the quality of life, you can ask following question to yourself:

  1. What is your aim?
  2. Are you on the right path for the desired results?
  3. What kind of changes is necessary to make your life better?
  4. Are you doing the exact things that can make you happier and feel better?
  5. What are the things important to you and your life?

These are some of the questions that can help any individual to figure out, what has been lacking in their lives, and how they can achieve the desired results. As it was told earlier, without commitment and effort you can’t achieve the improvement in your life. You have to work hard, make sure that you are taking all the necessary steps that can improve the quality of life.

With all above things that are one more important thing that everyone should understand about the quality of living. One should understand the weakness and strength of his own, and enhance the self-development. No formula, no teaching and no preaching can help you to improve the quality of life, unless you accept the challenge and understand that setting goal, and thinking is not the solution but action, effort and time are also required.

Every step or everyday one change can make you closer to the perfect and better life. Be patient and take a wise steps, and one day you can acquire the quality in your life.

Stress and Time Management

Are you stressed out because you cannot get the most important things done? Is your time managmenet leading to a lot of stress emotionally, physically and mentally? Don’t worry, I know exactly how you feel.

You see, time management and stress management are very intertwined. Anytime you experience procrastination and cannot get the most important task done – the act of not getting that task done creates stress.

And, that’s exactly why you need to look at your current itme management habits and examine them if you are experiencing some stress.

Here’s a good time management tip that can help you with your stress

1. When you get things done, it makes you feel good.

When we say we’re going to do something, we are essentially creating a commitment and when we don’t follow through on that commitment, it creates stress. You see, we generally don’t like people who don’t follow through on their commitments and when we do the same, we tend to not like ourselves. We tend to be ashamed and fee bad about not doing what we promised to do.

Here’s two ways to deal with this stress:

1. Get things done so you can feel good.

2. Check your commitments and realize that it’s OK to not do some of the things that you thought were important some time ago.

Both of these are important strategies to reduce stress and manage your time well. You need to get the important things done well to get it off your mind and give it some relaxing time. This act also ensures you follow through on your commitment which will make you feel good. And, stress cannot exist when you’re feeling good.

Sometimes we create commitments even when we have no intentions of following through. And, sometimes new information arise that make the commitment obsolete. We need to examine these commitments and look at exactly what we are putting off. If we are putting off something that doesn’t need to be done in the first place, there’s no need to worry about it.

Accept it and it will reduce your stress as well.

Examining your commitments is an excellent way of managing stress and time.
