How to Get Hired on a Job Interview

How to Get Hired on a Job Interview

Individuals looking for work often find it a frustrating experience. You send your resume, get short-listed and scheduled for an interview, and once the interview is done, they tell you to wait for their call and yet they never call you.  And you have to wonder what you did wrong. You have an impressive resume and a fairly remarkable work experience- how come nobody is hiring you?

Interviewers look beyond resumes when they hire people. Of course, this personal advertising tool is the first thing they check but once you are there in front of them, they put a lot of weight on what you say and how you say things. They focus on your thoughts and ideas, your manner of reasoning; they look at your body language; they assess whether your personality can adapt to the culture of the company. Lastly, they try to find out what you can do to contribute to the overall objective of the company.

Having said all that, let us go into the details of how you can impress your interviewer and land that job.

The First Impression

You have to create a good first impression. This means that you should dress professionally. Remember that it is better to over-dress for an interview rather than to dress sloppily. Your manner of dressing speaks loudly of what kind of person you really are, and interviewers can sense this easily. Another thing about first impressions is that you should always be extra early for interviews. Not only does this speak highly of your level of professionalism but being early also helps you to relax and mentally prepare yourself instead of getting all sweaty during the interview.

Kiss It

When answering questions, keep it short and simple. The lengthier your answers are, the more mistakes you are bound to make.  Do not try to impress your interviewer with your wide vocabulary and collection of colorful words- simple, straightforward answers will get you more plus points than talking too much.

Sell Yourself

It is good to be humble but when you are in an interviewer, you need to sell yourself. Think about this. There are probably at least 20 other people applying for the same position as you, what can make you stand out from the rest? Highlight on your skills and experience, and let your interview know about what you can contribute to their company should you get hired. Do not talk about “general strengths”; be more specific. Instead of saying “”I have good customer service skills,” you should say “I can sell 10 products daily to potential customers.”

Do Your Homework

One of the biggest blunders applicants make is not researching about the company prior to the interview. When you take initiative and show how proactive you are by actually finding out all you can about the company, as well as its mission and vision, you will surely get your interviewer’s attention.

Follow all these tips and you should be able to get your dream job in no time.
