How to Get Hired on a Job Interview

How to Get Hired on a Job Interview

Individuals looking for work often find it a frustrating experience. You send your resume, get short-listed and scheduled for an interview, and once the interview is done, they tell you to wait for their call and yet they never call you.  And you have to wonder what you did wrong. You have an impressive resume and a fairly remarkable work experience- how come nobody is hiring you?

Interviewers look beyond resumes when they hire people. Of course, this personal advertising tool is the first thing they check but once you are there in front of them, they put a lot of weight on what you say and how you say things. They focus on your thoughts and ideas, your manner of reasoning; they look at your body language; they assess whether your personality can adapt to the culture of the company. Lastly, they try to find out what you can do to contribute to the overall objective of the company.

Having said all that, let us go into the details of how you can impress your interviewer and land that job.

The First Impression

You have to create a good first impression. This means that you should dress professionally. Remember that it is better to over-dress for an interview rather than to dress sloppily. Your manner of dressing speaks loudly of what kind of person you really are, and interviewers can sense this easily. Another thing about first impressions is that you should always be extra early for interviews. Not only does this speak highly of your level of professionalism but being early also helps you to relax and mentally prepare yourself instead of getting all sweaty during the interview.

Kiss It

When answering questions, keep it short and simple. The lengthier your answers are, the more mistakes you are bound to make.  Do not try to impress your interviewer with your wide vocabulary and collection of colorful words- simple, straightforward answers will get you more plus points than talking too much.

Sell Yourself

It is good to be humble but when you are in an interviewer, you need to sell yourself. Think about this. There are probably at least 20 other people applying for the same position as you, what can make you stand out from the rest? Highlight on your skills and experience, and let your interview know about what you can contribute to their company should you get hired. Do not talk about “general strengths”; be more specific. Instead of saying “”I have good customer service skills,” you should say “I can sell 10 products daily to potential customers.”

Do Your Homework

One of the biggest blunders applicants make is not researching about the company prior to the interview. When you take initiative and show how proactive you are by actually finding out all you can about the company, as well as its mission and vision, you will surely get your interviewer’s attention.

Follow all these tips and you should be able to get your dream job in no time.

May Casual Drinking Become a Serious Problem?

May Casual Drinking Become a Serious Problem?

Many people drink alcoholic beverages as a way of relaxing or as a way of socializing and for some individuals this never becomes a problem. In the cases of some individuals however this can lead to serious problems with alcohol abuse and eventually lead to an even more serious problem – alcoholism.

It is often assumed by many that alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the same thing however the reality is that there is a difference between the two. One significant difference is that in most cases a person who is known to abuse alcohol does still have some control over when and if they drink while a person who suffers from alcoholism is often dependent on the use of alcohol.

Alcohol abuse often occurs when individuals begin drinking as a way to deal with the stress of certain situations such as losing a job or the death of a close loved one. While initially the effects of alcohol may numb the pain or reality of these circumstances over time it seems to take more and more alcohol to have the same effect. Over time this can lead to a dependence on alcohol known as alcoholism.

When alcohol abuse becomes an issue a person may know that they shouldn’t be drinking at that particular time however they allow poor judgment to win out over common sense and continue drinking anyway. In many cases this causes problems such as failing to keep up with prior commitments like taking care of children or other family responsibilities and may even have serious detrimental effects on job performance and the ability to maintain relationships.

It is often hard for individuals who are affected by alcohol abuse to admit they have a problem because this would mean they are admitting to not being in control of the situation which is often why they drink in the first place.

Just because a person has a drink or two on a regular basis such as a drink everyday with dinner or a drink each evening before bed, this does not necessarily mean they have a problem although attention should be paid to be sure that this practice does not lead to a problem over time.

Another distinction between casual drinking and alcohol abuse is when an individual looks for any opportunity to have a drink and use the cover that they are ‘celebrating’ something specific. For many people this may come in the form of acknowledging some minor achievement that does not really warrant celebration like finishing a good book or getting dinner ready on time. Although for average people this may not seem like much, to a person who has issues with alcohol abuse it may be considered a big deal as a way to give them a reason to drink in a situation that they consider celebratory.

When it comes to a point where a person finds themselves continually looking for a reason to celebrate in order to have a drink this may be an indication that a problem is starting to develop.

How to Get Over the End of a Relationship

How to Get Over the End of a Relationship

One of the most difficult things in existence can be when a relationship comes to a grinding halt. Occasionally, when this happens, it can be a joint decision which has been amicably reached by both partners. This can still be a bit difficult, but at least both parties felt it was time to move on, so they can part friends.

If only all relationships could end like this, it would be so much easier on everyone. Sadly, however, when a relationship ends, it is most likely one person wanted out while the other one wanted anything BUT an ending. This is the person who needs advice on how to get over the end of a relationship.

The first step in recovering from a broken relationship is to grieve. Grief is always the first step in moving past any significant loss. After all, the ending of a relationship is also a death, of sorts. Even if it was what needed to happen, there is still profound sadness that things will never be the same again. The grieving period should be long enough to be rid of the sadness, but it should not be allowed to last forever. Let yourself cry, scream, throw things, or whatever else makes you feel a bit better. Get it out of your system so you can move on.

At some point during the grieving process will come the acceptance that things are not going to change, and that the relationship is truly at an end. This is a positive turning point because, now, the real healing process can begin. Don’t force yourself to move any faster than you feel is good or possible for you. However, also, don’t allow yourself to simply wallow in your grief. You MUST try to move forward in your life if that is ever going to happen. Take baby steps and ease yourself back into the real world.

Before you realize it, you will experience a full hour of not thinking about your ex. That will eventually turn into a full day, then a week. Eventually, the ache and the pain will dull. One day, you will just wake up feeling happy the way you used to.

Allow your friends and family to help you through this very difficult time, but only to the extent that you are ready. Granted, in the beginning you will most likely want a lot of time alone. But don’t let that become too much of a habit. Gradually, let them spend time with you, take you out, or help you get rid of painful reminders of your past relationship. Your friends will be your lifeline when it comes to re-entering the world.  Before you turn them away, remember that they care about you and want to help make things easier for you, if they can. So, let them.

When a relationship first ends, it may feel as if life, itself, has ended as well. You may not see it at first, but there is always a light shining at the end of the tunnel. Just be patient enough to reach it.

The Importance of Effectively Managing Stress

The Importance of Effectively Managing Stress

Stress is an everyday part of life that must be dealt with each and every person in the world however each person deals with this experience in different ways. What may cause serious problems for one person may only slightly affect someone else.

Many people don’t realize the toll stress takes on our bodies and our health especially when this stress is not dealt with in an efficient manner. There are many ways of coping with stress and what works for one person may be completely ineffective for another individual facing the same basic problem. The key is to find stress management techniques that prove effective for that particular person.

Some people handle stress by isolating themselves from whatever is causing the problem at that specific moment for a certain amount of time. One example of this is going into another room for a brief period of time until the feeling of stress is relieved. For other people this process is a little more complicated and requires more advanced techniques.

Relieving stress is one of the necessary things in life that every one of us must learn at some point in order to remain healthy. When stress is not dealt with it can lead to serious problems like high blood pressure and heart attack among many other things.

While some individuals are able to reduce or relieve stress in fairly non active ways there are others that require a more active approach to this issue. Some of the most common ways that people manage their stress include slow breathing techniques, physical exercises like running or jogging and mind relaxation techniques.

Mind relaxation techniques include any mental activity that calms the mind and allows the reduction of stress. Many people that use this technique often retreat to a quiet place and think of things that are calming and serene such as a quiet pasture of wild flowers or feeling the sand between your toes on the beach. Unfortunately some people allow stress to build for so long that an activity as passive as this is often not an effective release of stress. People in these situations often need a more active outlet for letting go of stress and often resort to physical exercise such as running or jogging. How long they continue this particular activity may depend on a variety of factors including how long they have been stressed out or how excessive the amount of stress has been allowed to become.

Regardless of how a person chooses to handle stress one thing is certain; effective stress management is essential to maintain good health. When stress is left to continue building eventually a person is going to reach the breaking point and explode over something that is basically trivial and could be dealt with in a much calmer manner had their stress level not been allowed to accumulate to that point.

When you feel yourself reaching high levels of stress take a few moments to yourself to get the situation under control using whatever works for you and will notice your health will be much better and your mentality will be much clearer.

Three Steps to Develop a Positive Personality

Three Steps to Develop a Positive Personality

If a person’s goal is to improve his personality, a big part of his efforts should be dedicated to developing a positive outlook. Thoughts, feelings, and behavior shape our personality and define how others see us. When we are constantly thinking negative thoughts, these would manifest in the way we carry ourselves. You see, when a person thinks negatively all the time, such negativity will be very apparent in the way he handles things and this does not help him at all in terms of improving his personality.

How can a person be “positive”? Here are three ways to do this.

  1. Make a paradigm shift. A person who wants to make a big change must take a big leap. If you have been so used to your ordinary thinking patterns, you need to change it and make a fundamental change in your way of thinking, otherwise attaining a positive personality will just not be effective. Change your paradigm; take that step to changing the way you see people, things, and events in a more positive way and you will find that your personality will also change dramatically.
  2. Surround yourself with the right people. The company you are with plays a big role in shaping your personality. You are who your friends are, or so the adage goes. Make sure you are with the right company- people who are happy, successful, and positive- their influence on you will be to your benefit. On the other hand, if you are always with people who complain, procrastinate, and who can never seem to make anything good out of themselves, then ultimately, you will become like them, too.
  3. Make positive affirmations. Self-affirmation was a theory proposed by Claude Steele in 1988; it is designed to enable people to protect their image of themselves, a method to motivate and combat anything that aims to destroy our image. Self-affirmations are applicable to many situations however it is commonly used to help us pull through a break up, manage difficult relationships, and handle work-related stress. It is in these situations that we need to continuously encourage ourselves of our own self-worth- an invaluable tool to shield us from hurt and discouragement in the wake of emotional problems.

Having a positive personality can certainly help us in many ways. It helps to improve relationships, gain more friends, and will also contribute to getting more recognition in the workplace. A person with a positive outlook in life has better chances at success than those who are always complaining and nagging- who wants to work with these kinds of people, anyway?

If you want to improve your personality, start with being positive. This is not an easy feat especially if you have been so used to entertaining negative thoughts and being around negative people all the time. But if you can change your personality and become a positive person, you will see the difference that this will bring to you. Again, it is not easy but in the end, it will be worth it.
